Another important reason for putting sun protective film on your home windows is to protect your skin and home furnishings from harmful UV rays. Sun protection film blocks out 99% of UV radiation.
The #1 concern about UV rays is skin cancer. According to Cancer research:
- 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.
- 85% of melanomas are associated with exposure to UV radiation.
- Recent research found that drivers in America are more prone to get skin cancer on the left side of their face and arms due to the exposure to UV rays while they are driving.
Skin cancer is the most commonplace form of cancer. “Just because you are in your home does not mean you are protected from UV rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation published an article by Perry Robins, MD on their website saying: “To see the damage that untreated glass can do, take a close look at the furnishings in your home that are hit by direct sunlight. If the sun has faded the color of your sofa, it can just as easily damage your skin when you sit there.”
The Cancer Foundation over the last few years has begun recommending that people put sun protective film on their windows because UV rays are reflected off the floor and walls. White paint can reflect up to 22% of UV radiation and floors, even dark colored can reflect from 8% to 12% UV radiation
UV radiation can discolor your wood flooring in a very short time. If you have a wooden floor that is exposed to the sun move the furniture and lift your rugs to see if they are damaged. UV radiation can cost you thousands of dollars in floor repair and furniture replacement.
